LSC alumna nominated for Tony and Olivier Awards

The cast of Groundhog Day celebrating 7 Tony Award nominations

London Studio Centre’s very own alumna Ellen Kane is currently working in the states as Co-Choreographer on the Olivier-and-Tony-Award-nominated Groundhog Day The Musical! Having opened at the Old Vic, London in 2016 where it received 8 Olivier Award nominations, the show moved to Broadway earlier this year where it has since received 7 Tony Award nominations. Among these are both the Olivier and Tony Award nominations for Best Choreography (which Ellen was nominated for alongside her colleague Peter Darling).

After graduating from London Studio Centre where she took the contemporary dance pathway and toured with INTOTO Dance, Ellen Kane has gone on to have a hugely successful career. In 1999 she became a founder member of the Henri Oguike Dance Company and later joined and toured with the esteemed Richard Alston Company. She then went on to work on various West End, Broadway and international musicals. Her choreography credits include stage hits such as The Lord of the Rings (Theatre Royal, Drury Lane), Sister Act (London Palladium), Billy Elliot (West End/Australia/Chicago/Holland), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Theatre Royal, Drury Lane),Matilda (Stratford/West End/Broadway/US tour/Australia) and most recently, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (Playbill Theatre).

Based on the hit 1993 film starring Bill Murray, Groundhog Day reunites much of the same team that worked on the smash-hit Matilda The Musical including director Matthew Warchus, Tim Minchin providing music and lyrics, set designer Rob Howell, and choreographers Peter Darling and Ellen Kane. Written by Danny Rubin (who co-wrote the original screenplay), Groundhog Day follows jaded weatherman Phil Connors and his visit to a small Philadelphia town to report on the annual Groundhog Day festivities. However, Connors soon finds himself trapped in a literal time-loop, forced to live the same day over and over again. As a result, the show is an exploration of philosophical themes such as self-improvement, fate, death and love as well as being an entertaining and light-hearted musical.
